A new study from researchers at the University of California, Davis, suggests that consuming Ataulfo mangoes, also known as honey or Champagne mangoes, may have a significant impact on facial wrinkles in older women with fairer skin.
The study, which was published in the journal Nutrients, found that postmenopausal women who ate a half cup of Ataulfo mangoes four times a week saw a 23% decrease in deep wrinkles after two months and a 20% decrease after four months.
This is a significant improvement in wrinkles, said lead author Vivien Fam, a doctoral student in the UC Davis Department of Nutrition.

This suggests that while some mango may be good for skin health, too much of it may not be. The researchers theorize that the increased wrinkles may be related to the high sugar content in larger portions of mangoes.
The randomized clinical pilot study involved 28 postmenopausal women with Fitzpatrick skin types II or III, and used a high-resolution camera system to evaluate facial wrinkles. The study found that the group that consumed a half cup of mangoes saw improvements in all categories of wrinkles.
While more research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms behind the reduction in wrinkles, the study suggests that the beneficial effects of carotenoids and other phytonutrients in mangoes may help to build collagen.
